The fascinating thing that is the mind-gut-skin connection
In a previous article we discuss the importance of the gut microbiome and how it basically has its own living environment. Now, we discuss the fascinating thing that is the mind, gut and skin interacting with each other to give us our emotions, our digestive issues and habits as well as the condition of our skin.
Everything in our body is so creatively connected and this is just another exciting example of how taking care of one system, can take care of multiple areas of the body simultaneously.
A person who is constantly stressed and in a constant fight or flight mode will have elevated cortisol levels which will cause disregulated spikes in blood sugar. This is then the brain affecting the health of the skin as this can cause breakouts and an imbalance in the rest of the body as well. It is important to find things that relax you and bring you back to your calm centered self, even when life around you forces you to be in stressful situations. Regularly meditating, going on walks in nature or yoga can help bring your body back to balance.
The food we eat is also very important. Nutritional deficincies can also harm the gut lining and affect our brain health. This means that the food we eat can basically determine whether or not we will have energy that day, be able to focus, be in a good mood and can over time even cause feelings of anxiousness and depression. The food we eat is more than just fuel for the body but also food for the brain as well as our thoughts. It is important to eat a variety of good quality food. Living off of greasy takeout food might seem like the easy solution in the short term but it won’t be benefiting any part of you for the long run. Try to opt for simple colorful foods and a general rule of thumb is to stick to the outer aisles of grocery stores. You can also find good simple recipes in my other posts as well.
Skin health is affected by all of these things as the quality and state of your skin can determine the state of your gut as well as the brain, in some instances. Having a diet high in inflammatory foods will affect the skin and cause breakouts. One way to support skin health, that will also improve your mood as well as your overall health, is exercising. Regularly sweating can make give you a natural high as well as clear your skin and give you a nice sweaty glow. Don’t believe me? Go for a nice jog or sweaty yoga session today and see how your mood is improved and how your skin’s appearance over time is smoother and glower.
All parts of the body are interconnected and depend on each other for support and can be affected by each other greatly as well. It is important to take care of yourself as a whole by exercising, actively relaxing, eating quality whole foods and having fun.
Of course just focusing on one thing and completely ignoring the rest of the body won’t be as beneficial but its important to just remember that anything helps and you’re only doing it for you!
