How to be healthy while traveling

Staying healthy while traveling can seem like the biggest and hardest task there is to traveling. I mean, not only do you have to worry about getting to your destination, making sure you catch your connecting flight but now you have to make sure that you find good food in an airport?! To be honest it’s pretty difficult finding decent food that isn’t full of sugar, artificial flavors or fried, but here’s where I come in.

As we head into a busy season whether you are traveling for work or for the holidays or just catching a quick flight to a new destination flying can be taxing on the skin, digestion and your hydration levels. So the first thing is to make sure that you stay hydrated. I like to bring an empty water bottle through TSA and fill it before I get to my gate. This makes it easy to always have water and you don’t have to die of thirst waiting for the beverage cart to make its way over to you up in the air. If you’re flying outside of the US you might already know the lack of water bottle filling stations or even water fountains. There, I would make sure you remember to buy some good hydration. Lucky for you, Europe has some very good mineral water available.

For food I would make sure to pack a few fruits with you. This is easy to bring on board and even easier to eat. If you can pack apples, mandarins, bananas, anything easy to eat and easy to digest is great. Digestion slows down at high altitudes so if you ever wonder why you feel bloated after eating on a plane, that could be the reason. I also like to pack dried fruit and nuts and chocolates. I basically like to make my own trail mix by adding in almonds, dried apricots, mango, chocolate pieces, hazelnuts and whatever other nut you might like. With dried fruit it’s just important to make sure that you don’t buy the ones that are coated in sugar.

If you can pack beforehand, I would make an easy to assemble salad by adding in salad leaves, cucumbers, hemp seeds, and whatever else you like in a salad to a small Tupperware and add the dressing to a small jar to be mixed when you’re hungry. It’s healthy and you won’t have to eat airport food.

if you have a longer flight and absolutely need to eat something at the airport, I would say not to stress about it. Try to pick something that you know would make you feel good or that you would really enjoy. After all it’s okay to eat foods that make you happy on vacation and it’s not like you eat pizza or fried chicken or whatever it may be for you everyday.

Also there’s just something exciting and cozy about eating airplane food on an overnight flight isn’t there? Or maybe I’ve just grown up flying too much. Either way, happy flying and bon appetite!
