Is the Air in Your Bedroom Good for Your Sleep?

Many of us probably go to sleep without thinking much about the air in the room and how the quality of the air as well as the quality of your breathing can determine how well you sleep? This is so important considering sleep is one of the biggest factors determining our health. By simply sleeping without any ventilation, with windows and doors both closed shut, there is little air to be circulated. With no ventilation in the room, we actually start breathing the same air we just exhaled, meaning that the CO2 levels in the room increase, while oxygen actually decreases and this change in levels can actually wake us up and leave us feeling tired and groggy.

How you can increase the air quality in your bedroom:

  1. Sleep with the windows slightly open. This will help bring in a fresh breeze as well as the best option for fresh air.

  2. Try not to shut all the doors in your bedroom, this will let more air circulate throughout the house without trapping all the old air in the room.

  3. Getting an air purifier for the bedroom, this one is not a must, but if you can’t open your windows or doors at night, it would definitely be a benefit to getting the air cleaned.

  4. Sleeping with your mouth closed is huge as breathing through your nose actually filters out certain particles in the air that mouth breathing doesn’t. If you’re unsure of how to fix your mouth breathing, it is convenient to put mouth tape over your mouth to help your breath through your nose.

  5. Try to sleep on natural fibers such as linens and cottons.

  6. Vacuum the bedroom regularly to keep dust away as dust build up occurs much faster in the bedroom.

  7. Get plants in the bedroom. Certain plants breathe out oxygen during the night including pottos, monsteras, orchids, and snake and spider plants, to name a few. Since these plants breathe out oxygen at night as well they will clean out the co2 in the room and raise the oxygen levels for a better nights sleep.
