Why Aluminum should not be touching your food

Most people reach to aluminum foil when covering their baking sheets, covering food to keep warm or even when purchasing precooked food sitting in aluminum. While small portions or every once in a while won’t kill you, constantly eating out of and heating foods in aluminum can collect in your body.

Regularly baking in aluminum foil leaches only small amounts of aluminum in to your food, however cooking at temperatures over 200 degrees Celsius (400 F) as well as using salt, acid, or fatty food can cause higher amounts of aluminum to dissolve and leach into your food.

Even licking the aluminum yogurt lid can contribute to the accumulations of aluminum in the body as the yogurt has a slightly acidic pH level. The same goes with aluminum cans. While they are harmless when the lid is still intact, after opening a can of corn, for example, it is important to store the corn in another container as the inside of the can can also start leaching aluminum into the food as it comes in contact with air and the food in cans is generally salty.

The body can excrete small amounts of aluminum from the body, however larger quantities over time can start to collect in the body. This starts to collect in and harm the body including the nervous system, fertility issues as well as problems in bone growth and brain health.

There are many alternatives to baking with aluminum foil. While there is baking paper, there is also a more environmentally friendly option of silicone rolls that can be used over and over again. For wrapping food, there is the option of storing food in containers, preferably glass, or covering food in wax wraps. All options work great and you never have to worry about even small amounts of aluminum.
